Here is an interesting article, claiming Tolkien to be a "Theosophist", and placing the first day of the Fourth Age on exactly Wednesday 18th March 3,102 BC. (Of cours, the technology of Middle Earth, like iron/steel weaponry, farming techniques and even exotic crops like potatoes and tabacco don't fit in, but lets leave that aside.) He allows the geographic differences to be explained by everchanging continents, and places the timeline of the story effectively into prehistory, so it does not clash with "known" history. While " The Lord of the Rings" and the other works of Tolkien are ofcours fictional, Tolkien does not entirely remove it from the "real life" Universe, and gives material for a plausible placing in our own timeline.
